Serving Students Better

As I have studied the Lewiston-Auburn merger proposals, listened to debates and discussed the issues with friends, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to formally merge the two cities. As a retired teacher who taught in Auburn schools for 26 years, I have been paying particular attention to the merger as it pertains to education.

When it comes to providing a quality education, what really matters is good teaching supported by appropriate administration. A merger will not immediately affect current teaching and learning. What it will do is to provide future opportunities. Combining resources will make possible more diverse course options and choices at all levels. Merging administrations will provide cost savings that could be used to better support the most needy special ed students within the district.

A single vision for education and better coordination of programs can only serve our students for the better.
