Taking a Bold Step Forward

The time has come for the citizens of Lewiston and Auburn to make a crucial decision about their future.

Do they take bold steps forward for an exciting, collaborative, sustainable tomorrow? Or do residents close their eyes, hold their breath and pray that young people, businesses and visitors find reasons to return to L-A?

Do people pool their resources, double the capacity to innovate, to positively compete with Portland, Augusta and Bangor? Or do residents fight each other in the name of “preserving the city’s identity?”

I have been impressed with the thorough, transparent, considerable efforts of the members of the Charter Commission. These Auburn and Lewiston residents have committed more than a thousand hours apiece to studying the pros and cons of the merger. They have met twice a month for 3½ years, provided volumes of detailed information so that their neighbors might make the most informed decisions.

I believe the merger creates numerous cost savings for residents on both sides of the river. I believe the educational opportunities of combining school systems give students the best chance to excel in all areas.

When my wife, children and I moved to Maine 18 years ago, we were not simply changing jobs. We made a conscious decision to invest in Lewiston-Auburn rather than the towns around Portland. We were drawn to this community’s hard working, welcoming personality. We have savored every step of progress since we arrived.

I ask our neighbors to honor their grandparents by prioritizing their grandchildren.
